Why Barefoot Massage May Be a Game-Changer for Neurodivergent Clients

When we talk about massage, we often focus on pain relief, muscle knots, or physical stress—but for many of my clients, especially those who are neurodivergent, bodywork is also about feeling grounded, safe, and calm in their own skin.

At Deep Relief Massage Therapy by Katy D., I use a deep tissue technique called Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage, and I’ve seen how incredibly supportive it can be—not just for chronic pain, but for nervous system regulation, sensory needs, and emotional safety.

Here’s why this kind of massage might be just what your brain and body have been looking for.

Constant, Predictable Pressure = Nervous System Support

Ashiatsu involves long, gliding strokes delivered with the broad surface of my feet. Because I use overhead bars for control, I’m able to apply deep, even, continuous pressure that feels grounding—never jarring or choppy.

For neurodivergent individuals who may experience:

• Sensory sensitivities

• Dysregulation

• Anxiety or overstimulation

• A high-alert or “buzzing” nervous system

…this kind of touch can feel like a weighted blanket for your entire body.

It’s rhythmic, slow, and consistent—qualities that many of my clients describe as calming, centering, and even meditative.

Less Startling, More Soothing

Because I’m not switching quickly between body parts or digging in with sharp elbows or knuckles, your body has time to process the input and stay relaxed.

You won’t find abrupt pressure changes, noisy transitions, or a rush to “get to the next spot.” My sessions are all about creating an experience where your body can let go gradually—and stay there.

This is especially helpful for clients with ADHD, autism, sensory processing differences, or trauma backgrounds who may feel on edge in traditional massage settings.

You’re in Control the Whole Time

I check in often. I respond to your cues. And I welcome all the ways you might show up—whether you need extra quiet, like to know exactly what’s happening next, or want to pause and regroup.

Your needs, preferences, and comfort level are part of the session—not something you have to work around.

You Deserve a Bodywork Experience That Works With You - Not Against You

So often, neurodivergent folks are told to just “relax” in environments that aren’t designed for them. I don’t believe in that.

I believe your body deserves to feel supported in a way that makes sense for you.

That’s what barefoot massage can offer.

And it’s one of my favorite parts of this work.

Supporting you,
